How does ALIUD work?

Is your child experiencing school refusal? Do they struggle in a mainstream classroom? We are here to help. We support teens on their own independent homeschool journey by providing a safe online learning environment and educational mentor. At Aliud, each member receives an Educational Plan based on individual interests, strengths and academic goals. We meet each teen where they are and adjust academic goals accordingly. Teens are assigned a mentor that become their learning coach. Through regular meetings, mentors help guide, imagine and realize goals, track progress,  support online high school courses, and facilitate learning opportunities and community connections.

Who attends ALIUD?

Most teens come to us after spending some time in school. In some cases, our members have diagnosed learning differences and feel they are misunderstood or find it challenging in a conventional classroom.

Many of our teens feel bored and limited in school, and prefer to work from the comforts of their home.

Although, what each member has in common is the willingness to take responsibility for their own learning.

What about College or University?

Aliud members are encouraged to explore all their educational options. This can include online studies, virtual high school, workshops and post-secondary education. Some students choose to work towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma at their own pace, while others remain home-schooled learners. Many home-schooled individuals successfully enter college and university. Some individuals may choose to work toward PLAR, the CAEC, or alternative high school pathways. Some individuals become young entrepreneurs and build businesses around their areas of interest and strengths.

What is the difference between the Aliud Program and the 1:1 Learning Sessions?

The Aliud Alternative Program is designed for teens looking for an alternative to the mainstream classroom and who need ongoing, personalized support throughout their high school learning journey. This includes homeschooled students, online high school learners, PLAR support, and interest-based learning. The program includes daily support, personalized learning guidance, and learning reports.

The 1:1 Learning Sessions are hour-long support sessions for students who need help with specific tasks, such as homework, projects, online courses, homeschooling support, organization, or study skills. These sessions focus on the immediate task rather than full program planning and ongoing support.
